Kildimo Community Notes W/E June 8 2013

Kildimo Play School children looking forward to joining Kildimo National School shortly June 2013

ANNIVERSARIES:  On Sunday June 9, the noon Mass in St. Joseph’s Church will commemorate the late Mary O’Sullivan whose first anniversary occurs around this time.

RECENT DEATHS:  Sympathy is extended to Harry Williams of Clooncaura who suffered the loss of both his parents in recent times. May they rest in peace.

SUPPORTING CHILDREN THROUGH BEREAVEMENT:  The Newcastle West Family and Community Hub (located upstairs at the NCW Community Centre) will be holding a workshop on Wednesday June 12 on supporting children with bereavement or coping with a dying family member.  Running from 7.30-9.30pm, the session will be led by Child Psychologist and Play Therapist Tina O’Brien and funded by the Compassionate Communities Project with the support of West Limerick Resources.

YOUNG WOMEN:  The search for ‘Miss West Limerick 2013’ is on!  This is the brainchild of West Limerick 102fm and the winner will be crowned on July 5 in the Devon Inn.  Given Kildimo’s past and proud record of producing examples of supreme examples of womanhood, there should be no scarcity of entries that will be sponsored by local business or community groups at a cost of €70.  Entrance qualifications include the obvious gender requirement, domicile in West Limerick and aged between eighteen and twenty-eight.  The Co-Manager of the organising body Connie Broderick expects the winner to combine intelligence, compassion and independence with ambition and a sense of social responsibility.  No bother!

YOUTH CLUB:  Activities have ceased for the summer period with an outing to Kilfinane Outdoor Adventure Centre.  A total of sixteen members engaged in a wide range of physical activities under the direction of leaders Cathy and Dermot.  Thanks to all participants and leaders who make the activities of the Youth Club such an important part of youth development and socialising.  The new season begins next September when new sixth-class members and helpers will be welcome to participate.

COMMUNITY ALERT:  The ever-active committee of the local Community Alert are always on their alert for funding and facilities for those of mature years especially if living alone.  They are now compiling names of those who are eligible for personal alarm systems.  Contact Dermot (087 9319005) or Roisín (086 1989370) if you are anyone of your acquaintance might require such assistance.

PLAYGROUND ACTIVITY:  Members of the Pallaskenry Playground committee are organising a fundraising ‘Clothes Recycling Drive’ in aid of the development of the playground.  Joan O’Connell on 087 9858130 will offer advice on desired items and their collection.  Members will be on hand at the Community Centre Pallaskenry on Saturdays June 15 and 22, from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm.  Items required include clothes, bags, shoes, belts, bed linen towels, soft toys, textiles, mobile phones and books.  School books, magazines and diaries are not welcome.  A great opportunity to de-clutter your best unused and recyclable items.

NEW BOOK:  A ‘must have’ book for all who are interested in our flora, is the new publication by Sylvia Reynolds ‘The Flora of County Limerick’.  The product of decades of search and research on the part of this Count y Limerick lady from Foynes Island, it catalogues all the plants she has encountered in her extensive travels around the county and including areas like the lakes in Dromore and plants found there also present in the Burren of Co Clare.

BANTRACHT NA TUAITHE: Many thanks to all who supported the recent fundraiser in aid of the charity ‘SERVE’. The handmade flip-flop badges are a fair -trade product made by women from Nong Khai, Thailand, offering them an opportunity to earn a dignified living. Through the Redemptorist Community the proceeds of this fundraiser are used to assist women in various disadvantaged areas throughout their ministry.

GAA LOTTO:  The draw on May 27 for the Jackpot of €3,500 resulted in numbers 1, 6, 14& 24.  No members predicted this combination so ‘Lucky Dips’ of €50 were drawn by Sinead Kay, Dermot Mullane, Francis Loftus and Ger. Battles.

PALLASKENRY GATHERING:  There is something for everyone in the Gathering celebrations this weekend of June 7, 8, 9, as part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the Church of St. Mary in the village. The Kenry Historical Society will offer a tour of the environs of the church on Saturday June 8, at 11.00 am.  This early start is necessary because of the full programme of the events of the weekend.  Local historians will lead the leisurely informative stroll and will welcome participation from any of their group who might add their knowledge of the history and folklore of the village.  Meet with parking at the Community Centre and wheelchair accessible.
